‘I thought I had mono, but was just really bored’ Ohio hockey player, 20, finds a 25-inch tapeworm in his poop

Mary Kekatos of the Daily Mail reports that Carson Meyer had been feeling perpetually tired for almost a year.

The 20-year-old, who had recently been drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team, had been experiencing relentless lethargy along with pale skin and a loss of appetite.

Doctors, psychiatrists and trainers thought the Powell, Ohio, native might have depression, mononucleosis, and even cancer.

It wasn’t until a trip to the bathroom that Meyer figured out why he was sick – a 25-inch tapeworm had been living in his small intestine. ‘’

Raw can be risky.

Including raw fish used to make sushi, especially if it is not frozen at sea.

Following up my chat with daughter Sorenne while strolling around Noumea, New Caledonia last week, a Fresno man with a daily sushi habit had a 5.5-foot tapeworm lodged in his intestines. He pulled it out himself, wrapped it around a cardboard toilet paper tube and carried the creature into Fresno’s Community Regional Medical Center.

Michelle Robertson, a San Francisco Gate staff writer, reports that Kenny Banh was the lucky doc on shift at the time. He recounted his experience on a recent episode of the podcast “This Won’t Hurt A Bit.”

Banh said the patient complained of “bloody diarrhea” and expressed a desire to get treated for tapeworms.

“I get asked this a lot,” the doctor said. “Truthfully, a lot of times I don’t think they have it.”

This man had it, which he proved to Banh by opening a plastic grocery bag and pulling out the worm-wrapped toilet paper tube.

Banh then asked some questions, starting with: “That came out of your bottom?”

“Yes.”

According to the doctor’s retelling, the patient was using the restroom when he noticed what looked like a piece of intestine hanging out of his body.

 “He grabs it, and he pulls on it, and it keeps coming out,” Banh recounted. He then picks the thing up, “looks at it, and what does it do? It starts moving.”

That’s when the man realized he had a tapeworm stuck in his insides. He headed to the emergency room shortly thereafter, where Banh treated him with an anthelmintic, a single-treatment deworming medication used on humans and dogs alike.

Banh also took it upon himself to measure the specimen on the floor of the hospital. It stretched a whopping 5 feet, 6 inches — “my height,” noted the doctor.

Tapeworms can be contracted in a variety of ways, but Banh said his patient hadn’t traveled out of the country or engaged in any out-of-the-ordinary behavior. The man also professed his love of sushi, specifically raw salmon sashimi, which he confessed to eating daily.

The story has attracted attention all over the world, as these things tend to do, says Peter Olson, a tapeworm expert and a researcher at the Natural History Museum’s life sciences department, who was quoted as telling The Guardian, “because they’re gross”. The worm, he says, was “almost certainly something called the broad fish tapeworm … salmon is one of the main ways you would pick it up, if you don’t cook the meat.” The life of the broad fish tapeworm involves more than one host. “A typical life cycle might include a bear that feeds on salmon, then defecates back into the river. The larvae would be passed into the environment and, in the case of an aquatic life cycle like this, it would be eaten by something like a copepod, a little crustacean. When that copepod is eaten by a fish, it would transform into a larval tapeworm and that’s what is being transmitted to a human in this case. That would go to the intestine and grow into this giant worm.”

The tapeworm is a monstrous and impressive creation. It has a segmented body, with male and female reproductive organs in each segment, so it is capable of self-fertilisation. It does not have a head as such – its “head” is only useful for holding on to its host’s gut, rather than for “eating” (it absorbs nutrients through its skin). In many cases, you would not know you were infected. You might spot bits of tapeworm segment in your stool – small, pale, rice-like bits – or experience stomach pain or vomiting.

Doctors in Taiwan extracted an 8-and-a-half foot tapeworm from a girl’s intestine and believe she contracted the parasite through raw, contaminated fish.

Why food preparers should wash hands: Frenzal Rhomb singer Jay Whalley has pig tapeworm removed from brain after eating contaminated vegetarian burrito

The lead singer of Australian punk band Frenzel Rhomb has revealed he has had surgery to remove a pig tapeworm from his brain.

Huffington Post reports that Jay Whalley is a vegetarian – something which has prompted a horrified chorus of WTFs from around the world.

Thoughtful Whalley took to Facebook to explain all – and supplied a tapeworm.gruesome picture of the scar too.

It all began in January with the 40-year-old singer experiencing a series of seizures which led to the discovery of what doctors thought was a potentially cancerous brain tumour.

Later tests revealed it was neurocysticercosis – an infection caused by a pork tapeworm (cysticercosis) which had found its way into his brain.

Whalley recounted the subsequent conversation with his doctor: “A what tapeworm?”

“A pig “

“A pig?!? I’m f—ing vegetarian! How did I get the egg from a f—ing pig worm in my brain?!?”

It appears the parasite ended up in Whalley’s head after the eggs were transferred to him from the feces of an infected person via ingestion – in this Jay-small-piccase en route a vegetarian burrito prepared by an infected chef who didn’t wash his hands properly.

The parasite is most commonly found in Mexico and large parts of Central America – and Whalley’s infection was traced back to a visit to the region four years ago.

Is that a tapeworm you have or are you just happy to see me; ceviche, to eat or not

The cooking in this case is a misnomer – I prepared ceviche. It has different iterations with varied ingredients, but as a food safety nerd, the one constant element of concern (which makes it ceviche) is raw fish “cooked” with lime juice. Eating this dish a few years ago would have been easy, but with three years of food safety research and two years of vet school under my belt, I just know a bit too much about the risks involved. Yet, here I am, preparing it.

Besides the well-known possibility of a bacterial contamination, like Salmonella (as in a recent sushi outbreak), Listeria (of special concern for pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals), or Vibrio, I happened to recall a parasitology lecture about Diphyllobothrium latum, a.k.a. broad tapeworm (although not a true tapeworm, we will call it that to spare you the details as to what qualifies as a true tapeworm).

D. latum is becoming more common in developed countries due to the increasing popularity of dishes based around raw fish (e.g., ceviche, sushi, sashimi). Doing some research, I found a paper where the acidity of the lime lowered the Vibrio numbers down to a safe level, while another study found lime acidity to have no effect on Salmonella. Listeria seems to be less resistant to acidic condition when kept at 7º C, and since ceviche is refrigerated for two hours while the fish “cooks,” the risk of Listeria could be reduced (I would still never feed this to a pregnant woman or immunocompromised individual).

Regarding the tapeworm, I didn’t find anything specific about lime juice, but the FDA makes the following recommendation:

“Parasites (in the larval stage) consumed in uncooked, or undercooked, unfrozen seafood can present a human health hazard. Among parasites, the nematodes or roundworms (Anisakis spp., Pseudoterranova spp., Eustrongylides spp. and Gnathostoma spp.), cestodes or tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium spp.) and trematodes or flukes (Chlonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis spp., Heterophyes spp., Metagonimus spp., Nanophyetes salminicola and Paragonimus spp.) are of most concern in seafood. Freezing and storing at -4°F (-20°C) or below for 7 days (total time), or freezing at -31°F (-35°C) or below until solid and storing at -31°F (-35°C) or below for 15 hours, or freezing at -31°F (-35°C) or below until solid and storing at -4°F (-20°C) or below for 24 hours is sufficient to kill parasites. FDA’s Food Code recommends these freezing conditions to retailers who provide fish intended for raw consumption.”

I used cod, and found no evidence of it ever being involved in a tapeworm infection; but it could be possible. And if I end up with a tapeworm, I will let you all know. As for my kitchen clean-up, I did the same as when I deal with any raw meat: clean and disinfect all surfaces and stuck all utensils in my dishwasher.

Eat raw fish … Get a 9-foot tapeworm

Amy didn’t feel too good last night.  She thought maybe it was the damn-near raw tuna on her salad the other afternoon when we ventured to our nearest patio for some Sunday relaxation.

Probably not. But raw is not without its risks.

One summer day in August 2006, Anthony Franz went to a Chicago area hospital carrying a 9-foot worm.

He did not find it in his garden.

Franz is one of the few, but growing number of tapeworm victims in cities across the world who are discovering (or rediscovering) that some of the most popular fish can host parasites.

Although still rare, a study this June showed salmon tapeworm infestations tripled from an average of 0.32 cases per 100,000 people each year in Kyoto, Japan, to at least to 1 case in 100,000 people in 2008. As more people adopt sushi and undercooked fish diets around the world so too, has the worm spread. …

"Parasites are really a non-issue, it’s not as big of a problem as time and temperature holding," said Pamela Tom, Seafood Network Information Center Director at the University of California, Davis. "People focus on methyl mercury, but in reality it’s not as important as the bacteria."

Lawsuit alleges man gets 9-foot tapeworm from seafood restaurant

The first salmon Amy cooked for me – she caught me a delicious salmon – was damn near raw. Now, we cook it to about 125 F, checked using a tip-sensitive digital thermometer, and it warms up to 130-140 F in the minutes from grill to gullet.

Apparently that didn’t happen for Anthony Franz, who is suing the parent company of Shaw’s Crab House for causing him to become “violently ill” after eating undercooked salmon at the trendy River North restaurant.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the suit, filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court, claims Franz ate periodically at Shaw’s between May and August 2006 as part of a healthier diet.

For several days, Franz became violently ill and eventually passed a nine-foot long tapeworm, the suit said.

A suburban doctor he visited in late August said he got the tapeworm from eating undercooked fish. …

He claims in the two-count suit that the restaurant failed to supervise employees in safe food handling and allowed customers to eat food that was not safe to consume.

Raw and undercooked seafood continues to present risks. The N.Y. Times covered the issue of tapeworms in seafood in a 1981 article.
